HIV/AIDS đang là một trong những hiểm họa lớn nhất đối với sự phát triển  ở Thái Lan, ảnh hưởng tới mọi hoạt động trong xã hội Thái  Lan, từ cấp  vi mô tới cấp vĩ mô. Bài viết này tổng hợp  tình hình mại dâm ở Thái Lan, bao gồm  tệ nạn buôn bán phụ nữ được ghi nhận  có liên quan đến  tỷ lệ nhiễm HIV/AIDS cao trong khu vực. Bài viết này dựa trên tổng hợp những thông tin thứ cấp và số liệu định tính thu thập được trong chuyến đi thực địa tới một  số nơi ở Thái Lan, từ Bangkok đến ChiangMai, ChiangRai và các tỉnh dọc  biên giới Thái Lan ở vùng tam giác vàng (Thái Lan - Lào - Miến Điện) vào tháng  3/2003. Mặc  dù thời gian của chuyến  đi có hạn, song khá nhiều  chi tiết ít được công  bố trên báo chí hay các báo cáo chính thống  đã được ghi nhận, ví dụ, động lực của mại dâm hiện nay, vấn đề buôn  bán phụ  nữ và tình thế khó xử của chương trình can thiệp HIV/AIDS  tại Thái Lan. Bài viết này tập trung vào nạn mại dâm bao gồm tệ buôn  bán phụ  nữ người  dân tộc thiểu  số sống  ở vùng cao và phụ  nữ nhập  cư từ Miến  Điện.   Đây  là con đường dẫn đến dịch HIV/AID theo hướng  mới tại Thái Lan, con đường cần được biết và dự phòng.

 Abstract

There is nodoubt that HIV/AIDS poses one of the greatest threats to the development in Thailand and affects all kinds of activities in Thai society, from the micro level up to the macro level. This paper is concerned with the business of commercial sex in Thailand, including women trafficking, its role in the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. The paper is based on the secondary information and qualitative data from the fieldtrip to a series of places in Thailand from Bangkok to ChiangMai, ChiangRai and some provinces along the border of Thailand in the Golden Triangle in March, 2003. Although the time for our trip was limited, we gained a lot of facts and details that were rarely published in official papers or reports such as dynamic of current sex industry, issue of trafficking women and dilemma for HIV/AIDS intervention program in Thailand. This paper focuses on the sex industry including traf- ficking hill tribe and Burmese women - the way that has led to an HIV/AIDS epidemic of immense pro- portion - a transmission route that we should understand and take action for prevention.
