| Raising the local residents’ awareness of preventing dioxin exposure through foods at Danang hotspot |

On March 4th – 5th 2011, Vietnam Public Health Association implemented the third monitoring activity to assess and support communication activities in the intervention program for reducing dioxin exposure through foods for local residents in the 4 wards An Khe, Hoa Khe, Thanh Khe Tay and Chinh Gian in Da Nang city. The result of random monitoring at 16 households shows that after one year implementing the intervention activities, local residents in the 4 wards have some important knowledge of preventing dioxin exposure through foods such as the high-risk foods, not using the well water without any treatment, not eating the saturate fat and avoiding buying food of unclear origin. The communication activities through loudspeaker systems in each ward, which have been implemented since December 2010, have informed the main topics about methods of preventing dioxin exposure through foods. Notably, in An Khe ward, the implementing officers use some rhymed slogans easy for people to remember.  Survey on resident's knowledge about the preventing of dioxin exposure through foods In the coming time, Da Nang Provincial Public Health Association and the relevant units in the program will finalize the list of households in 2010 to prepare for the evaluation of post-intervention, make the detailed plan for policy advocacy to issue the ban on fishing, farming and consuming high-risks food in the contaminated areas. |
