From the 22nd - 27th November, 2011, the 6th “Workshop on the Teaching Public Health” took place in Da Nang. It was the activity of the project to improve the teaching of Public Health funded by “Else Kroener-Fresenius-Stiftung” foundation. The objective of the project is to improve and reform the teaching of Public Health in the provincial medical schools. The project started with medical school in Thai Binh, then medical schools in Thai Nguyen and Da Nang and will collaborate with all schools interested. On November 28th 2011 in Da Nang city, Vietnam Public Health Association (PHA) in collaboration with Da Nang PPHA held a workshop namely "Preventing dioxin exposure at the dioxin hot spot", concluding the intervention program in terms of preventing dioxin exposure through foods in Da Nang city, implemented by VPHA and Da Nang PPHA. After one year of intervention, local residents' knowledge and practice on dioxin exposure prevention in the four wards An Khe, Hoa Khe, Thanh Khe Tay, and Chinh Gian have significantly improved. These program's intervention activities have been highly appreciated and committed to maintain at the local areas by functional departments.

On November 29th 2011, Tien Hai district PHA hosted a workshop named “Developing a new work plan for the next phase and addressing stakeholders’ role in health promotion program for the elderly ”. In the workshop, participants brainstormed and discussed some measures, specific programs that EPHMs could be involved such as lobbying to earn one or two positions for EPHMs in the commune healthcare Committee, participating in more specific programs such as prevention of hypertension and complications, bone and joint diseases and rehabilitation. Besides, EPHMs would deliver interpersonal communication for other elderly people and the whole community about health topics. Communal health centers will be responsible for supporting EPHMs. |

Training on policy advocacy capacity |

From 20th to 25th November, 2011, VPHA in collaboration with Binh Dinh PPHA and Dong Nai PPHA held the training courses on "Advocacy in Public Health" at their provinces. Representatives of the provincial units including: Provincial Police, Department of Transportation, Department of Information & Communication, Department of Education & Training, provincial Women's Union, Farmers' Association, Association of the Elderly, some provincial health centers attended the training courses. The participants actively discussed the situation, local health problems, took role play to be able to understand concepts and practise their skills in advocacy. A communication session on elderly health The self-assessment results about learners' advocacy capacity before courses showed that: in Binh Dinh, 47% learners said they had a bit of advocacy capacity in Public Health, 31% did not have any. In Dong Nai, 37% learners said they had advocacy capacity at good level, 36% had a bit and 22% did not have any. After 3 days of training, learners self-assessed their progressive level of knowledge on policy advocacy.100% of the learners found that their knowledge improved from 1 to 2 levels. Especially some learners found that their knowledge improved 4 levels (from level 1 to 5). These are the activities in the capacity building plan for public health members and strengthening the sectoral collaboration in public health of VPHA
