| Study tour in Hong Kong on implementing smoke-free public areas |

On March 15th -18th , 2010, representatives of Vietnam Public Health Association (VPHA) and Vice Presidents of 6 provincial People’s Committees (Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Ha Tinh, Hue, Khanh Hoa and Dong Thap- where the tobacco control program is being implemented) had an educational tour on implementing smoke-free public areas in Hong Kong. It is one of the activities of the program "Strengthening the enforcement of the smoke-free policy through the VPHA’s network” sponsored by the Bloomberg Initiative Fund (BI). The delegates had a working session and paid a visit to Kwaichung Hospital - a hospital that has successfully implemented the smoke-free policy. The delegates also had working sessions with the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH). At the working session, representatives of COSH shared experiences on implementing smoke-free public areas. In November 2009, Hong Kong began implementation of a law on tobacco control. After 3 months of the law’s implementation, all forms of tobacco advertising were prohibited entirely in any way. The key to success, according to these experts, is the coordination among relevant agencies and strong support from the Government. Delegates found the study tour very useful. The representatives of six provincial leaders pledged to support the tobacco control activities at their locale, thus agreeing to strengthen the implementation of the Prime Minister’s Decision No 1315QD/TTg on tobacco control. |
