Enhancing cooperation between Vietnam Public Health Association and the Vietnam Association on the Elderly PDF   E-mail
Tuesday, 02 March 2010 23:03
On February 23rd 2010, leaders of Vietnam Public Health Association (VPHA) and Vietnam Association on the Elderly (VAE) had a meeting in the first days of lunar New Year to discuss a cooperative program between the two associations for implementing the new Law on Elderly.

People participating in the meeting  included PhD Le Vu Anh, the Standing Vice President of VPHA, and Mr. Nguyen Tan Trinh, Vice President of Vietnam National Committee on Aging cum President of VAE and staffs. This was the first time leaders of the two associations have had a meeting to develop both short-term and long-term cooperative programs in area of elderly caring.

According to General Statistics Office, the number of senior citizens in Vietnam is now approximately 9 million and will reach 16.8% of the population by 2029. Population aging presents challenges to social, economic and cultural development in our country. According toNguyen Tan Trinh, to meet the needs of this population, it is necessary to reform health care and social services in Vietnam.

The Law on Elderly, which has just been issued, is the “guiding tool” for elderly support activities. According to Prof. Le Vu Anh, to take advantage of the law to mobilize older people’s capacity, it is important to study the law’s specific articles and develop new social and health care services.

After the working session, the two sides agreed on the following key points:
-    VPHA will draft an agenda for short-term and long-term cooperative programs based on the Law on Elderly. The agenda will address stakeholders’ missions and cooperation on program activities. Leaders of the two Associations will approve the final agenda as a basis for the cooperation.

-    VAE also offered some priorities for the year 2010 including: Standardization of the training agenda for nursing staff at home; developing a draft of health management program for the elderly at the grassroots level; compiling a communication brochure for Behavioral Change, and guiding for caring for and treating common diseases in elderly people.

VAE also has appreciated VPHA’s ideas and cooperation. The meeting makes a good initial  start for a new successful and effective cooperation to promote older people’s social participation and to bring a elderly Vietnamese people a better life.
